Celebrating the International Day of Women and Girls in Science

February 11th is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science.  This annual celebration, initiated by a resolution of the United Nations in 2015, recognizes the critical role that women and girls play in science and technology. Yale Physics recognizes our outstanding community members.  Read more.

Celebrating Black History Month

person looking at painting In honor of Black History Month, Yale Physics recognizes Edward Bouchet, the first black person to earn a Ph.D. from an American university (Yale 1876), as well as our current faculty and alumni who were recently named as inspiring Black scientists in America: O. Keith Baker, Larry Gladney, Michael Murrell, Charles D. Brown II, and Brooke Russell.  Read more.

WiP+ celebrates mentors

zoom photos of WiP+ members Yale Graduate Women in Physics+ (WiP+) hosted a lunch for women in physics and allies in order to celebrate their mentors and the impact mentors have had on their lives and careers. As a part of this event, WiP+ additionally asked some successful mentors at Yale to write about mentorship. These short pieces were published on the Yale WiP+ Twitter account (@yale_wip) and are available here.

Physics majors welcomed into department in annual hoodie ceremony

zoom grid of people The Yale University Physics Department officially welcomed 47 newly-declared undergraduate majors in physics, physics (intensive), physics and geosciences, physics and philosophy, and mathematics and physics in its annual hoodie ceremony.  The annual hoodie ceremony began in 2014 in order to acknowledge students who have formally declared as a physics major.  Read more.

YPPDO provides career resources to support students and postdocs who are interested in non-academic career opportunities

 The Yale Physics Professional Development Organization (YPPDO) is a graduate student-led organization that provides professional development resources to physical science PhD students and postdocs. In particular, the YPPDO focuses on exposing PhD students and postdocs to non-academic career opportunities and providing them with opportunities to develop the skills required to make the transition to these fields.

Wright Lab wears red to raise awareness of heart health matters and funds for the American Heart Association

Wright Lab hosted a special event in celebration of National Wear Red Day on February 7, 2020.  National Wear Red Day is an annual celebration to raise awarness and funds for the number one killer of women–cardiovascular disease.  Donations accepted at the event were sent to the American Heart Association (Greater New Haven Chapter).
