Event description:

Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) are used as a standard ruler to constrain the expansion history of the Universe. In the first part of the talk I will give an overview of the measurements we can make using the BAO scale and how we make them. In the second part of the talk I will discuss the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS), a galaxy survey designed to make such measurements. I will describe the analysis techniques we use to ensure the full potential of the data is realised. Finally I will talk about the next generation of galaxy surveys with particular emphasis on the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI).
