YPPDO Postdoc Panel with Valla Fatemi, Laura Havener, Danielle Norcini, and Gianantonio Pezzullo
When: Friday September 11, 2020 at 3pm - 4pm
Where: Zoom

Description: Please join us for a virtual panel about applying for postdoc positions and fellowships with four of Yale’s own postdocs and former graduate students: Valla Fatemi, Laura Havener, Danielle Norcini, and Gianantonio Pezzullo. Their bios are below.

Valla Fatemi: Valla is a postdoctoral associate in the lab of Michel Devoret in the Applied Physics Department of Yale University, where he experimentally investigates exotic physics in superconductor-semiconductor devices with circuit quantum electrodynamics tools. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics at Columbia University, where he also researched electronic transport through single molecules in the group of Latha Venkataraman. His PhD was conducted in the group Pablo Jarillo-Herrero at MIT’s Physics department, where he conducted experimental research on topological insulators, 2d crystalline superconductors, and twisted bilayer graphene.

Laura Havener: Laura is originally from North Carolina and received her Bachelor’s degree in physics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. After undergrad, she went to Columbia University for graduate school where she got her PhD in experimental high energy nuclear physics and was a member of the ATLAS collaboration. After completing her PhD, she became a Postdoctoral Associate at Yale University and a member of the ALICE Collaboration where she has continued research in high energy nuclear physics. Specifically, her research involves analyzing data from heavy ion collisions at the LHC to study properties of the quark-gluon plasma.

Danielle Norcini: Danielle received her undergraduate degrees in physics and philosophy from Penn State University and her Ph.D. from the Wright Laboratory at Yale University. She helped lead the R&D and construction of the PROSPECT reactor neutrino experiment to search for sterile neutrino oscillations and make the world-leading measurement of the uranium-235 antineutrino energy spectrum. Currently, Danielle is a KICP and Grainger Fellow at the University of Chicago where she is developing low-threshold CCD detectors to search for dark matter with DAMIC-M. Outside the lab, you can find Danielle at home experimenting with baking ratios, reading interior design blogs, or by the lake playing with her dog Kip.

Gianantonio Pezzullo: Gianantonio’s academic career took place at the University of Pisa (3+2 undergrad&master + 3 years PhD), with a lot of time spent at Fermilab for his thesis work. Then he got a 2 years PostDoc position @ Univ/INFN of Pisa, with 1 year spent at Fermilab as an Intensity Frontier Fellow. Now that he has joined Sarah Demer’s group as a postdoctoral fellow at Yale, his research focuses are the development of the Mu2e trigger system and analysis work, and algorithm development at ATLAS.

In this panel, the postdocs will discuss their application process, current research work, and advice for graduate students and current postdocs applying for their next postdoc. Please submit your questions https://forms.gle/HaV7Q4GdUxisyPPX8 or bring them to the virtual Q&A.
