2024 Undergraduate Hoodie Ceremony and Research Fair

November 19, 2024

On Friday, November  15, 2024, the physics department celebrated our junior class of physics majors, followed by the undergraduate research fair where students heard brief presentations about current research projects in the department.

The undergraduate hoodie ceremony is where members of the junior class, who have declared as a physics major, are presented with the physics hoodie. This annual department tradition began in 2014, and is an anticipated milestone for students.

The class of 2026  is one of the largest classes in the history of the physics department at 52 students!

Continuing the day’s events, the Undergraduate Research Fair was held in the SPL 3rd Floor lounge. Pizza was served and the attendees partook while listening to short research presentations by faculty members. See below for a link to the slide show of research presentations.

Steven Girvin, Sterling Professor of Physics, who presented, commented, “It is wonderful to see such a large increase in the number of declared physics majors and faculty presenting numerous research opportunities for our undergraduates.”

Steve Lamoreaux, Eugene Higgins Professor of Physics, added, “The response I received was greater than I’ve ever had before. Four students contacted me regarding projects.”

Daphne Klemme, undergraduate registrar said, “Overall, the day was a  great success for the Yale Physics undergraduate program.”
