Yu-Ting Chang, YC’2027 an Astrophysics & Political Science Major, working with Chiara Mingarelli, has won a NASA CT Space Grant for continuing his undergraduate research on the project, “Effects of Chromatic Noise Mismodeling on Gravitational Wave Background Detection with Pulsar Timing Array Datasets”.
Chiara commented, “I am very happy to congratulate Yu-Ting Chang on receiving the NASA CT Space Grant. This achievement highlights Yu-Ting’s outstanding dedication to his gravitational-wave research and his potential to make significant contributions to the field.”
In addition to his studies and his research in Astrophysics, Yu-Ting is a member of the Yale University Guild of Carillonneurs which is the student organization responsible for ringing the bells in Harkness Tower. It is a self-perpetuating group: each fall, the current members give lessons to freshmen and sophomores (and sometimes graduate students) on the practice carillon, and, after auditions, elect new members to the Guild. On December 4, 2024, he brought some members from the Mingarelli group to listen to him play.
The Guild was founded in 1949 by Elliot H. Kone BR ‘49 as the Guild of Yale Bellringers. It was renamed in 1964, two years before the donation of 44 additional bells expanded the original chime to a 54-bell carillon.
The NASA Connecticut Space Grant Consortium (CTSGC) is a federally mandated grant, internship, and scholarship program that is funded as a part of NASA Education. There are Space Grant Consortia in all 50 states, plus Washington D.C. and Puerto Rico. NASA CTSGC, in an effort to encourage broader participation in NASA research programs, was formed in 1991 by the following post-secondary education institutions: Trinity College, University of Connecticut, and University of New Haven with the University of Hartford as the lead institution.
