On October 9, 2024, the Yale Quantum Institute celebrated 10 Years since they were established. YQI started when they  hosted their very first YQI Colloquium that day on 2014,  welcoming Krysta Svore from Microsoft for a talk on “Probabilistic Quantum Circuit Decomposition”. YQI did not have their current space at the time and they talk was hosted by Physics in Sloane Lab!

After YQI moved into their space at 17 Hillhouse they grew from 12 to 30 research groups, hired 10 YQI Fellows, hosted 576 events, published 2,100+ peer-reviewed articles… And looking at the near future, YQI will grow and move to the new Yale Physica Sciences and Engineering Building (PSEB), which broke ground September 30, 2024!

From the YQI website, “Founded in 2014 and spanning 30 research groups, the Yale Quantum Institute serves as a forum to bring together experimental and theoretical researchers and students in the field of Quantum information Science on campus. In addition to research, YQI offers an active quantum science outreach program, including an Artist-in-Residence program running since 2017, to make quantum science accessible to all through art and the humanities.”

Steve Girvin, Sterling Professor of Physics, stated, “The Yale Quantum Institute is a wonderful convening body that brings together faculty, students and postdocs from many different departments working to advance quantum science and engineering at Yale.  The lively conversations that take place in our seminar space are constantly stimulating new interdisciplinary collaborations.”

Further, on the future PSEB Girvin commented,  “The Yale Physical Sciences and Egineering Building is the largest construction project in Yale’s history and represents a massive investment in the future of physical sciences and engineering.  The building will have a very large amount of high-quality lab space, wonderful core facilities, and a new center for instrumentation development which will bring together researchers from across the university.  I expect the investment in PSEB will help us recruit new generations of outstanding scientists and engineers to Yale and open up new research opportunities for our students.”

Jack Harris, professor of physics, commented, “The YQI was originally created as an acknowledgement of Yale’s leadership position in the field of quantum information physics. Over the last ten years it has grown into a real community that spans departments, connections with the arts, public outreach, professional development, and a tremendous level of scientific productivity. The benefit it provides to Yale is vastly greater than what could have been achieved by individual faculty and individual departments.”
