A search for the decay of a charged kaon into a pion, a muon and an electron
Dissertation Abstract:
We search for the lepton flavor number violating decay $K\sp+ \to \pi\sp+\mu\sp+e\sp-$ in Experiment E865 at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Data from the 1995 experimental run is analyzed. We find no evidence for this decay and establish an upper limit on its branching ratio of $2.2 \times 10\sp{-10}$ at the 90% confidence limit for a uniform phase-space density decay distribution. The experiment ran again in 1996, and took a factor of 4-5 more data. Another run is planned for 1998 which is expected to approximately double the amount of data taken in 1995 and 1996.
